Dunfermline's Dramatic Celebration Of A ‘Great King’

Europe’s top jousting team, The Knights Royal, will headline a dramatic line up at this year’s Bruce Festival in Dunfermline.

Taking place against the backdrop of Dunfermline Abbey, the King’s final resting place, on 12th and 13th of July 2014, the two-day event has been timed to coincide with Robert the Bruce’s birthday (11th July).

Another major highlight of the free two-day festival, which is part of the 2014 Homecoming celebrations, is the ferocious fighting of the battle reenactments.

Less combative attractions include street theatre, interactive medieval cookery stalls, food from some of the best Scottish producers and a chance for children to participate in the Bruce Highland Games.

Noble steeds, falconry displays and medieval farmyard animals complete what will be a step back in time for visitors.

The Knights Royal and re-enactors will lead visitors in a procession through the streets of the historical town and Ancient Capital of Scotland, to Pittencrieff Park, to mark the ceremonial opening of the festival.

Jeremy Richardson of the Knights Royal said, “We are honoured to be a part of Dunfermline’s Bruce Festival celebrating the life of a great King of Scotland. In years to come when asked ‘Where were you during Homecoming 2014?’ we can say that we performed in ancient capital of Scotland in the company of the King’s direct descendent, the current Lord Bruce.”

Also new for 2014 will be the week long build-up to the event that celebrates Dunfermline’s links with the Scottish hero and the town’s important role at the centre of Scotland’s story. Dunfermline will be alive with street performers and live entertainment with many businesses providing special Bruce fayre.

The Bruce Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday 13th July 2014 between 11am and 4pm at Pittencrieff Park, known locally as ‘The Glen’.
