Jungle hamster

There are about 300 species of hamsters. Hamsters are very close relatives of the muskrat and vole. In appearance they are not very similar to their relatives. From such a large group of hamsters, unfortunately only some species can be classified as pets. These include the Roborowski's hamster, the Zabajkalski hamster, the Syrian Chinese hamster and the jungle hamster. We will focus on the jungle hamster. In Latin, the jungle hamster means Phodopus sungorus, just like the Chinese hamster is a dwarf hamster and has a stripe on its back.

It is definitely more rounded than the Chinese hamster and is much smaller than the Syrian hamster. The jungle hamster has a body length of about nine centimetres and a body weight of between thirty and forty grams. The back of our hamster is light ash with a clearly marked dark stripe that runs from the forehead to the base of the tail, which is short.

The underside of your pet's body is always lighter than the back. This hamster in its natural environment in summer takes on a much darker color of fur, the back is then gray and the belly white. In winter his fur is very bright. When we keep him at home all year round, his fur takes on a grey ointment. The natural habitat of the jungles are the steppes and tundra of Western Siberia. This is where they live very cheerfully in the wild, they do not tend to fall asleep in winter and also show great physical activity throughout the year. The jungle hamster is a very living animal, but at the same time nervous, which makes it more difficult to tame. But it is easy to grow, so it is recommended for beginners. It is considered to be a very friendly hamster species. They live in groups. You can therefore keep them together on the condition that they have been with each other since early childhood, i.e. that they come from a single litter and there has never been separation. The fecundity of the jungle is considered to be high. Within one year the female usually gives birth three to seven times, four to seven young offspring each. Pregnancy lasts twenty-one days. Sexual maturity in the hamster occurs after one to two months. The jungle hamster in captivity lives only up to three years.

To sum up, the above article shows that the jungle hamster means Phodopus sungorus, just like the Chinese hamster is a dwarf hamster and has a stripe on its back.
